Simulation prepares SCC health students for ‘chaotic’ hospitals

More than 200 students participated

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — More than 200 Southeast Community College health science students participated in a simulated hospital day on Friday.

The event took place in SCC’s state-of-the-art facility, which opened in October 2020.

Students from every health program at the college attended the simulations, plus students from Union College, also located in Lincoln.

Students conducted a range of simulated emergencies and also attended training on communication, racism in medicine and other topics.

Brittney Rinn, a second-year medical laboratory student at SCC, recounted how the day was an educational advantage for students in the program.

“The simulation lab today was a really great experience,” she said. “It was very chaotic, and that’s to be expected in hospitals or even clinics. And so it was a good experience, I think, for all departments to be able to see what other departments do, what their job roles are, what their knowledge levels are, what their education levels are and how we have to rely on everyone and its not one department more important than the other.”

SCC hopes to continue conducting simulated hospital days, helping students gain experience.
