Small plane makes emergency landing in bean field near Norfolk

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A Wisconsin man had to make an emergency landing in a bean field Thursday in northeast Nebraska.

Just before 4 p.m., Norfolk emergency dispatchers received a report of a “mayday” call from a small plane that had recently left the Norfolk Regional Airport.

According to the Madison County Sheriff’s Office, the plane was found in a bean field east of Norfolk, just under a mile south of the intersection of East Norfolk Avenue and Agnes Drive.

The pilot, and sole occupant of the plane, was not injured.

According to the pilot, once he reached an altitude of 5,500 feet, he had engine trouble and tried to return to the airport.

Realizing he couldn’t make it back, he turned the plane into the wind and landed in the bean field.

The incident was reported to the appropriate aviation authorities, the sheriff’s office said.
