A lot of people have reached out about workplace concerns at Smithfield Foods in Crete. Health officials have confirmed 47 cases, all linked to the facility.

Channel 8 Eyewitness News talked to one of them who has been home with the virus for the last 12 days.

“It’s been a nightmare, an absolute nightmare,” said Smithfield Employee, David Desi Macias Jr.

The fear of bringing home the virus happened to David and now he and his entire family have tested positive. He says he can’t help but feel guilty about it.

“In this case I feel like I brought it home and I feel really bad because now all 3 of us are suffering and I feel like it’s because of me,” said David Desi Macias Jr.

Like many other employees and family members we’ve talked too, they all agree a short break is all they need. They recommend the plant shutdown for a few weeks so they can deep clean and get everyone else tested. However, that won’t happen because President Trump signed an executive order keeping meat plants open.

David said a break could possibly save lives.

“I mean they are always telling us how much they value us and that safety is number one,” said David Desi Macias Jr. “I would really like to see them show us, show us that we are valued and show us our safety matters and most of all show us how our lives matter.”

David was told he could head back to work on Friday but he says his symptoms are still there. He also has asthma and COPD.

The doctor just told him late Wednesday that he could have another week off. But even then, he is still worried about going back.

“I’m wondering if I am going to catch it again and if I am going to go back home or if I still got it and I give it to my co workers, that scares me,” said David Desi Macias Jr.

David is just asking for help because he knows a lot of workers at Smithfield Foods are afraid to speak out. He says he values each and every friendship and co–worker he has there.
