Storm potential Thursday into Friday
SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH: Through 11pm Thursday, April 9, 2026
A Severe T-storm Watch is in place for Richardson, Nemaha, Pawnee, Johnson, Gage, Thayer, Nuckolls, and Jefferson counties until 11pm Thursday night.
A level 1 Marginal Risk and a level 2 Slight Risk continues to be in place for the potential for severe storms by late afternoon and into the evening hours. Large hail, damaging wind, and isolated tornadoes are possible.
Far southeast Nebraska into northeast Kansas and NW Missouri is in a risk for tornadoes late afternoon and evening. 2% doesn’t sound high, but it’s not zero. The 2% usually means one or two spin up tornadoes are possible in this area. The black hash marks means EF-2 would be the max tornado strength if something really gets going. These storms are expected to form late this Thursday afternoon into the evening hours.
Much of SE and south central Nebraska into KS, MO, and IA has the potential for large hail this afternoon and evening. More intense rounds of storms are expected to form late in the afternoon and into the evening. Those in the brown shaded area may see hail up to an inch. The area shaded in yellow with the hatching may see hail up to 2″ in diameter.
Much of SE and south central Nebraska into KS, MO, and IA has the potential for damaging wind this afternoon and evening. More intense rounds of storms are expected to form late in the afternoon and into the evening. Those in the brown shaded area may see wind up to 60 mph. The area shaded in yellow may see wind in excess of 60 mph and up to 70 mph.
Storms will try to get going just before sunset (above), then push south and southeast. Another line of storms will then try to form again along I80 in SE Nebraska. See below for that timing.
