Storm potential tonight and Friday
Storms are expected to start firing up in the green shaded area in Nebraska this evening, after sunset, and last into very early Friday. They will push east northeast after forming and may have some gusty wind and hail.
Storms will start to fire up after sunset, closer to 9-10pm. These may struggle to get going initially.
The later it gets, the more widespread the storms become. After midnight, storms will move north of I80 into north central and northeast Nebraska.
Below is what our StormCast weather model is showing for timing, location, and duration of the storm potential. The first part shows Thursday night into early Friday, the second part shows the storm potential for Friday afternoon.
The Friday afternoon storms have a higher risk to be strong to severe with large hail, damaging wind, and isolated tornadoes. There is a level 1, 2, and 3 risk for severe storms. The green is a level 1 “Marginal Risk”, the yellow is a level 2 “Slight Risk”, and the orange is a level 3 out of 5 “Enhanced Risk”.
When storms get going, a tornado will be possible. A strong tornado is possible in the areas you see the black hash marks.
Hail up to the size of golf balls is possible in the areas you see the black hash marks.
Wind gusts at 60 to 70+ mph are possible in the areas you see the black hash marks.
On the other side of the state, a few inches of snow and a gusty north wind is possible. A Winter Weather Advisory is in place through Friday into very early Saturday.
After a warm day on Friday, then a cool day on Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Tuesday look very warm again.
