Suspect dies from burns after deadly shooting and fire in Glenwood, Iowa

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — A man accused of fatally shooting his neighbors in western Iowa died Friday.

Dennis Burnell, 71, had suffered severe burns in a fire at his house during the shooting.

The scene unfolded Wednesday night in Glenwood, a town of 5,000 people across the border from Plattsmouth, Nebraska.

When officers arrived, they found Burnell’s house on fire and two people with gunshot wounds outside.

Investigators determined that Burnell fatally shot his neighbors, Brandon and Stevie Oman, during a dispute.

Brandon, 38, died at the scene. Stevie, 35, was taken to the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, where she later died.

Burnell was taken into custody as he came out of his burning home.

He was in critical condition and was taken to the Kansas University Medical Center burn unit in Kansas City.

The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation said there will be an autopsy of Burnell’s body.
