Teens ran away from officers after stealing car in northeast Lincoln, police say

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Two teens were caught Wednesday night after they stole a car from a northeast Lincoln home, police say.

Around 9:30 p.m., two boys – ages 15 and 16 – stole a car from a home near 84th and Holdrege Streets.  Police said the vehicle had been unlocked with its keys inside.

As they were leaving the driveway, the car struck the home’s mailbox, causing about $500 in damage.

Using the car’s location service, officers were able to find the vehicle near Second and W Streets, but the teens drove off.  The officers did not pursue the teens.

Around 11:30 p.m., a Nebraska State Patrol trooper saw the teens near 56th Street and Fletcher Avenue, and a pursuit began.

Troopers then laid down stop sticks near 56th Street and Alvo Road, which brought the vehicle to a stop, according to the Nebraska State Patrol.

During a chase, the 16-year-old boy reached for his waistband, and an officer used a Taser to stop him, police said.

He also kicked an officer and spat on a trooper’s face, the patrol said.

Both teens were then taken to the Youth Detention Center.

The 15-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of willful reckless driving, flight to avoid arrest, theft by unlawful taking and obstructing a peace officer, according to the patrol.

The 16-year-old was arrested on suspicion of assaulting an officer, theft by unlawful taking, assault on an officer with bodily fluids, obstructing a peace officer and resisting arrest.
