Thieves rack up nearly $15,000 in fraudulent charges while preying on Lincoln shoppers
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The Lincoln Police Department is sending a warning to shoppers this holiday season.
Authorities say thieves are hiding in plain sight and looking to take advantage of this busy time of year.
Just last weekend, crooks racked up nearly $15,000 in fraudulent charges after targeting people at Lincoln stores, police say.

Shoppers in Lincoln say they are aware of the situation. For them, the most important thing is to pay attention to the surroundings.
“If somebody was coming towards me and I was outside of the car, I would most definitely get inside the car or go into the building right away,” Robin DeVries said.
This practice might not be new, but many say it happens more during this time of the year.
“It was the holidays. I was shopping, a gentleman started following me after my car,” JoAnn Roth said. “That was really scary but what I basically did that time was, I was close to the traffic, so I just went to the road.”
Lincoln Police recommend using a purse that zips or latches shut when out shopping and keeping it secure at all times.
Authorities also say to carry your wallet in your front pocket or even inside your coat instead of using a back pocket.
Police ask that people be wary of overly friendly strangers, as they could be trying to distract you so their partner can make a move.
In addition, police say to avoid using your phone in those situations, as it may give thieves an opening to steal something.
