LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Two South Dakota men were arrested Tuesday following a brief chase in the Panhandle.

Just before 7 p.m., a trooper with the Nebraska State Patrol saw a Buick sedan driving with no license plates on Highway 87 in Sheridan County.

The trooper pulled the vehicle over, but it sped off as the trooper approached, according to the state patrol.

A short time later, another trooper successfully deployed stop spikes, bringing the car to a stop near Hay Springs.

Two passengers in the vehicle complied with the trooper’s commands, but the driver and another passenger ran from the scene.

According to the state patrol, the passenger — 22-year-old Tyrone Caldwell of Pine Ridge, South Dakota — was found a short time later and had a hatchet.

Caldwell was arrested on suspicion of obstructing a peace officer and possession of a concealed weapon.

The driver — 37-year-old Michael Jack, also of Pine Ridge — was found a mile north of where the vehicle was stopped.

Jack was arrested on suspicion of flight to avoid arrest, obstructing a peace officer, driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to obey a lawful order, no driver’s license, possession of an open alcohol container, and traffic violations.

Both Jack and Caldwell were lodged in the Sheridan County Jail.

The other two passengers had no charges and were released.
