LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – WarHorse Gaming announced Thursday that it has submitted an application to operate casinos in Lincoln and Omaha.

It’s the first casino operator to submit an application after the Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission approved rules for casinos at the state’s horse racetracks, according to a press release.

“The commission has done a phenomenal job in creating a comprehensive regulatory standard for an entirely new industry within the state,” said Lance Morgan, CEO of Ho-Chunk Inc., parent company of WarHorse Gaming.  “We are extremely excited the time has come for us to submit our application and begin the process of bringing world-class casinos that all Nebraskans can be proud of.”

WarHorse anticipates that the Lincoln casino will be the first to open in the state.  It will feature 1,300 gaming stations, a 196-room hotel, event space, several restaurants and live horse racing.

The Omaha and Lincoln projects are expected to take around 18 to 24 months to complete, according to WarHorse.

But before the grand opening, WarHorse will have a “phased opening” that will include 400 slot machines at the Lincoln location and 800 in Omaha.

Lincoln’s phased opening is scheduled for later this year, WarHorse said.
