‘We will never forget’: Local servicemen take steps to remember those we lost

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Echos of feet hitting the concrete could be heard in Memorial Stadium early Friday morning; each step commemorating 9/11 first responders.

It’s called the Annual Patriot Day Run, where Lincoln’s first responders and the armed forces get together at 6 a.m. to climb the same amount of stairs as those heroes did in the World Trade Center.

“There are so many reasons why we are here today, one just to do and perform the same actions that they performed in their last moments, but more so, its something strenuous. It’s something that empties you and we want to be emptied so we can be filled up with something greater: humility, service, self-sacrifice,” commented Lincoln Police Officer Luke Bonkiewicz.

After the run, Lincoln Fire and Rescue hosted a virtual ceremony in honor of the tragedy’s 19th anniversary.
