‘We’ve never lost a tailgate’: Husker fans tailgate in all kinds of weather

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – It’s well known that nothing will stop husker fans from filling Memorial Stadium. Saturday morning’s rain was no exception.

“We had a break from the weather around 9 a.m., so we got it set up pretty good,” said long-time tailgater Joel Hupp. “The rain came multiple times but it’s all good.”

Hundreds of tailgaters fill up the parking lots around Memorial Stadium on Husker game days with good food, fun games and tons of husker spirit.

Most say they tailgate for fun, but some have family members they’ve come to support.

“We’re big husker fans of course,” said Trevor Maack. “But our cheerleader Payton is who we come to watch, she’s kind of our inspiration.”

Joel Hupp has been tailgating for nearly 30 years and says cheering for the Huskers is a lot like marriage. You have to stick with them, even in the bad seasons.

“We started tailgating in the early 90’s when I graduated from college, and I’ve been coming back every year,” said Hupp.

Luckily for the Huskers, the sun broke through the clouds just minutes before kickoff.
