Winter Storm Warnings through Tuesday morning

Sunday night update:
A Blizzard Warning has been added to the counties of Red Willow and Hitchcock through AM Tuesday. Several inches of snow with wind gusts nearing 65 mph will be possible Monday.
Winter Storm Warnings remain in place for much of the state. 4-8″+ of snow will be possible with wind gusts nearing 30 mph Monday and 45 mph on Tuesday.
Winter Weather Advisories are in place on the western edge of the warnings for a few inches of snow and a lot of wind.

Overall, much of the eastern half of Nebraska will see up to 8″ of snow. Some isolated areas may see a little more. It’s going to be a wet and heavy snow, so getting totals above 8″ will be difficult. Not impossible, just difficult!

Above is an hour by hour look at the forecast. Notice the rain mixing in early, which may cut out an inch or so of possible snow. Temperatures also hover around the freezing mark, so some of that snow may melt as it hits the ground early.

There are a few things going against higher snowfall totals, but it’s a good bet that we’ll see at least 4″ of snow. In fact, much of eastern Nebraska is in a 70-100% chance of seeing at least 4″ of snow.

We’re looking at several hours of light to moderate snow on Monday. Once it starts to pile up, it won’t quit for a while!

For Lincoln, once we get into the late morning hours, the chance for snow to continue is high. It will likely last into the early Tuesday timeframe.

Because of the snow and wind, we have several warnings and advisories through Tuesday morning. Mostly a Winter Storm Warning for 4-8″ of snow and gusty wind. A Blizzard Warning for SW Nebraska for several inches of snow and 65 mph wind potential.

While snow looks to continue most of Monday, one thing I’m watching closely is the dry air in Kansas. Forecast models have it staying in Kansas, but if it makes it into Nebraska, we may see lower totals, so we’ll see!

Wind Gusts

After the snow stops falling, the wind will pick up late Monday into Tuesday. It’s going to be a heavy and wet snow, but some of it may still blow around creating hazardous driving conditions.
