‘Your Wallet’: Lincoln organizations offer plenty of budget-friendly Halloween options

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — Spooky season is upon us, and this Halloween may look scary for your wallet.

From candy to costumes, the National Retail Federation says Americans are projected to spend more than 12 billion dollars on the holiday this year.

However, there are plenty of options here at home to have budget-friendly Halloween fun. You just need to get a little creative.

“You can build whatever your head can come up with,” said Yantsy Claflin, the operations manager at Two Men and a Truck.

The company is offering a cheap way to make a costume that will certainly be the talk of the neighborhood.

Claflin said these “box”tumes will run you between $2-6 dollars as oppose to the normal $30-50 at a retail store.

You just need some moving boxes and other every day items like plastic bowls, cups and a little glue or tape.

“It’s that easy,” Claflin said.

And if you aren’t feeling your creative side you can always go thrifting.

“It’s a fun little treasure hunt,” said Alana Sesow from the Goodwill of Lincoln. “You never know exactly what you’re going to find here.”

Sesow said this is definitely Goodwill’s busiest time of the year for its stores. Sesow said Goodwill has so many different ways to mix and match the perfect spooky combination.

“We also offer a bunch of variety of things from all sections of our stores that people can use to put their own Halloween costumes together,” Sesow said

Goodwill is also partnering with Gateway Mall to host two free events this month. That includes a pet costume contest this Saturday, Oct. 21, and a trunk or treat event on Halloween night.

“We think that everyone should be able to enjoy Halloween,” Sesow said. “We think we should be apart of other people’s Halloween experience.”

If you’re looking to get rid of any Halloween supplies after the holiday, Goodwill says it will gladly take that off your hands as well.
