UPDATE: One dead after NSP pursuit of stolen semi truck

Authorities say one person has died after a crash involving a state trooper and a semi truck.

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office has identified the man killed during a pursuit by the Nebraska State Patrol (NSP).

The driver is identified as 37-year-old Zackery Stearns. He had stolen a 2006 Peterbilt semi-truck, with no trailer, and was driving east on Van dorn with NSP in pursuit.

Stearns collided with another Peterbilt dump truck and trailer near 148th and Van Dorn Streets, he died on scene.

The second truck was driven by 60-year-old Gary Staack from Avoca he was not injured.

The crash happened Wednesday just after 11:30 a.m. near 148th and Van Dorn St.

According to officials, NSP received information about a stolen semi that was traveling eastbound on Van Dorn, just east of Lincoln. A trooper observed the semi traveling eastbound near 112th and Van Dorn. The trooper attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled, traveling at 80 miles per hour on the gravel road.

As the vehicle reached 148th street, it failed to stop at a stop sign and collided with the trailer of a semi-tractor/truck trailer, officials said. The trooper called for emergency medical personnel and arrived on scene immediately. The trooper then located the driver of the stolen semi-tractor, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said, the driver of the other semi-tractor was not injured.

NSP is requesting Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office conduct the investigation of this incident.
