19-year-old charged with first-degree assault in shooting of Lincoln teens

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Court records have identified a 19-year-old who remains at large after the shooting of two teens late Tuesday night.

Jason Hernandez, 19, was charged Wednesday with first-degree assault, use of a firearm to commit a felony and possession of a firearm by a prohibited person.

A witness told authorities that they picked up Hernandez from his home Tuesday evening to attend a house party near 22nd and Dudley Streets.

While in the car, Hernandez pulled out a handgun to show it to everyone, court documents allege.

The 18-year-old who was eventually shot by Hernandez was in the car, the witness said.

When they arrived at the party, Hernandez allegedly began waving the gun around and pointing it at guests, court documents say.

Later that night, several witnesses reported hearing a single gunshot.

One partygoer saw Hernandez shoot in the direction of the 18-year-old when they walked into the kitchen, according to court documents.

A 19-year-old was also shot but only suffered a graze wound to his left shoulder.

The 18-year-old, who was shot in the chest, walked outside to get the attention of a nearby police officer and told him that he’d been shot.

He was rushed to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries after first responders provided emergency aid.

Investigators met with him at the hospital, where he said he was “intentionally shot” by someone matching Hernandez’s appearance.

Later on, police searched the home, where they found one spent shell casing in the kitchen, court documents say.

Police had found the gun described by witnesses in the middle of the street.  That weapon turned out to be stolen back in 2020 in Memphis, Tennessee.

A Lancaster County judge has issued an arrest warrant for Hernandez.

Anyone with information is asked to call Lincoln Police at 402-441-6000 or Crime Stoppers at 402-475-3600.

Authorities have yet to give an update on the 18-year-old’s condition.
