27-year-old man drowns at Sarpy County lake after canoe capsizes

Authorities are reminding everyone that water can be extra dangerous this time of year given big temperature differences

SARPY COUNTY, Neb. (KLKN) – UPDATE: The Sarpy County Sheriff’s Office has identified Zachariah Lade of Gretna as the man who drowned at Wehrspann Lake.

A 27-year-old man is dead following the first reported drowning in our area this spring.

His passing has authorities reminding everyone that water can be especially dangerous this time of year given the big difference in temperature back on land.

Witnesses say they heard the man yelling for help on the north end of Wehrspann Lake around 6:15 last night, in the Chalco Hills Recreation Area.

They then spotted the capsized canoe.

The man had gone under by the time anyone could reach him, but they were able to pull him back to shore.

He was taken to a hospital shortly after that, where the man was later pronounced deceased.

Authorities say they are not releasing the man’s identity until his family is contacted.
