Local high schoolers introduced to world of electrical training

Students received advice and hands-on experience from electrical professionals on Friday. It’s all in hope to attract more people to the growing industry.

The Lincoln Electrical Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee held a career fair and introduced local high school students  to the world of electrical training

“This is a skill that’s in high demand, it’s not going away,”  said Roy Lamb, a JATC TRAINING DIRECTOR. “We’ve got individuals after five years of apprenticeship training, that are making over $100,000 a year and have no student loan debt.”

Many got hands on experience, working with virtual reality goggles, thermal imaging, motor controls, electrical cables, and more.

“The most fascinating thing I learned is about fiber optics,” said ANTHONY IVNCHUK, a local high school student. “I got to learn which color they are and why they twist because of the magnetic field, that was the most interesting part to me.”

Another student said the career path is an interest of his because it also impacts his community.

“I think that running fiber optic cables would be a very interesting career, something that has a bright future for not only as a job but just helping out your community and doing something you enjoy,” said Alex Martin.

Lamb says an apprenticeship is better for those who want an option outside of college and the debt that comes with it.

“I want them to take away that they have options in their career paths,” said Lamb. “That they don’t just have to go to a two year or four year college, not discounting that but here’s a way that they can get this education and get paid for it and have no student loan debt.”

The JATC will have another career fair open to the public tomorrow at 1415 Old Farm Road Lincoln, NE 68512. For more information, visit http://lincolnelectricaljatc.org/
