Stubborn clouds will be slow to erode Thursday

A “yuck” day for southeast Nebraska Wednesday.  Yes, that is a meteorological word.  Yuck.  Thursday’s skies will look similar without the precipitation.

A cloud deck is taking up residence between approximately 3,000 feet and 7,000 feet above the ground over much of southeast Nebraska.  The reason is a weak inversion.  Instead of the air temperature dropping with height – like normal – there is a warm layer of air residing just above the clouds.  High resolution computer models suggest the warm layer of air will remain in place over portions of southeast Nebraska, including Lincoln, Thursday.

The layer of clouds will likely keep temperatures from moving much Thursday.  Highs should only reach the middle 40°s Thursday afternoon.  However, further west towards the Tri Cities, clouds will break and the sun will make an appearance.  Where it does, temperatures will top out in the middle to upper 50°s.
