With rise in kidnapping attempts, more people are looking for ways to defend themselves

With attempted kidnappings on the rise, some people are wondering what they can do to protect themselves.

One Lincoln woman wants people to know that there are resources available for self-defense.

Brittany Tomes works for Damsel in Defense, a worldwide organization.

Its mission is to educate, equip and empower men and women with self defense tools.

“A lot of people don’t know basic self–defense, how to get away if someone grabs you by the arm, that’s something that everyone should know,” said Tomes.

Tomes is a survivor of sexual assault, which she says is a reason why she’s so passionate about this issue.

“Anything that you can have to where if that person were to get their hands on you, you have an extra tool, the ability to have something to help you get out of that situation,” said Tomes.

The tools offered range from simple alarms for children or the elderly all the way up to stun guns.

The organization also offers pepper spray that can spray up to 16 feet if you’re being followed or chased.

Tomes’ personal favorite is the striking tool.

“My mother always told me to keep my keys between my fingers and this does the exact same thing except it’s going to do a lot more damage to your attacker and you’re less likely to cut yourself in the process of it,” said Tomes.

The goal is for these tools to give a person a better sense of security.

Tomes says having something to defend yourself is always better than nothing.

“Whether it’s a ten dollar pepper spray or going up to a stun gun, whatever makes you feel more comfortable.”

Tomes says that hopefully, no one will have to use these products.

But it’s always better to be safe.
