An emotional vigil took place in Omaha Tuesday night and things got heated. What was supposed to be a night of peace and remembrance quickly turned dangerous.
"We pray right now that god will give you strength and even in these toughest moments you remember the best memories you had with family, and that’s what you keep in your memory,” a pastor said at the vigil.
The vigil was held outside the apartment where Destacia Straughn and her daughter Kenacia were killed. More than 50 people gathered to share memories, and say prayers for the violence to end. Neighbors say more could have been done to prevent this senseless murder, saying police have been called to this address several times before. Kenacia’s father spoke and got emotional about his little girl and that’s when the trouble began.
As emotions ran high, one woman, apparently the aunt of the little girl killed, jumped out of her car and started yelling at Kenacia’s father. After that, a major fight broke out, with police coming in to break it up. After it was broken up the first time, several people ran behind the apartment complex and started fighting again, this time, yelling about retaliation. Several members of the media were there and were all told to back up by police because they said some people in the fight might be armed.
Neighbors told us off camera they’re worried about their safety, fearing retaliation from people they suspect, Dontevous Loyd, is affiliated with. They tell us before the murder on Sunday, police were called on the couple on several occasions.
