Fans react to Lincoln Pius X state championship in boys basketball

Saturday was state championship day for boys basketball.

A lot of Lincoln sports fans were pumped up for the big game, which featured Lincoln Pius X, a local high school.

Lincoln Pius X was looking for it’s first state championship in boys basketball since 2004.

“We’ve been praying a lot for it at school, since we’re catholic so… Yeah, I’m just excited. I think it will be a really competitive game, but I think Pius will come out on top,” said Joe Heim, a sophomore student at Pius.

“We’re really excited to watch Lincoln Pius hopefully win the championship,” said Carter McBeak, a Pius fan.

“We’ve been waiting for this all year. The boys have been working so hard. Pius is so excited to be here,” said Chloe Barrett, a senior student at Pius.

The game lived up to expectations.

Lincoln Pius X led throughout regulation, but the game ended up going to overtime.

“I’m really hoping we come out on top. They’ve worked so hard. I know that they are going to push and fight as much as they can and prove that we can do this,” said Barrett.

The thunderbolts battled hard for the home town crowd, which was loud throughout.

Finally, after two overtime periods, Pius came out on top, claiming their first state title in 15 years!

“It means a lot because, usually it’s the Omaha schools that win state and Pius hasn’t won state since 2004,” said McBeak.

“It’s really great to see how much all of the Lincoln schools have done and just how much we’ve been represented. Especially as a senior, going through it, it’s great to finally see Lincoln schools represented here,” said Barrett.
