Local animal rescue saves over 30 dogs from Oklahoma kill shelter

A local animal rescue gave 34 homeless animals their “ride to freedom” on Saturday in the hope that they can find a better life in Lincoln.

The volunteer drivers left at 5 am Saturday morning and didn’t get back to Lincoln until just after 3 in the afternoon.

“It was fun, it’s a good mission to do,” said Norma Smyth, a volunteer driver with Dolly’s Legacy Animal Rescue.

The group of animals come from a difficult situation.

Volunteers with Dolly’s Legacy Animal Rescue are hoping these animals can find a better life in the capital city.

“We take in these animals from very bad situations. They come out of kill shelters in Oklahoma that are rural areas, very poor communities so we bring them up here to Lincoln, hopefully to find forever homes where they will be loved and cherished, treated as family members,” said Kerri Kelly, Director of Dolly’s Legacy.

Kelly has been a driving force on the animal rescue front for many years.

She has coordinated the rescue placement of & mobilized transport for more than 15,000 death row animals in high kill shelters in the south.

Her mission is to save orphaned and abandoned pets from overcrowded shelters and find them loving, forever homes.

Volunteers from the shelter are taking in all 34 animals, they say space is getting a bit crowded. They hope more people will join the cause as foster homes and donations are always welcomed.

“We have twenty puppies currently in our foster, not including the ones that came today and the pregnant mom, so we’re always looking for donations for puppy pads, used towels, laundry detergent, you name it, we could probably use it, so please reach out to us, there’s an opportunity to give,” said Joann Kaczor, fundraising coordinator for Dolly’s Legacy.

What’s next for the animals? Kelly says they will be vetted, spayed, neutered and micro chipped. In the next week or two, the animals will be put up on the Dolly’s Legacy’s website.

Kelly says they hope many within the community consider taking a pet in as a foster home.

“If you’re not able to find a pet at a local shelter, please reach out to a local rescue such as dolly’s legacy, we can help you find a pet that is perfect for your family,” said Kelly.
