Two local organizations offering free income tax preparation

It’s that time of year again.
Tax season.
Starting next week, two local organizations are offering free income tax prep for certain Lincoln families.
Fortunately, for those Lincoln families looking for a little help, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program. Or VITA, is open for appointments starting next week.
“Taxes can seem overwhelming and difficult but when you come, we will make it easy, and we have the resources to help you,” said Katie McGuire, with the Lincoln VITA Coalition.
“VITA is a program that allows for people to come in the community to have their income taxes prepared for free. It’s a great opportunity to bring your tax documents in and have a consultation with an IRS certified tax preparer,” said McGuire.
The meetings are by appointment only at Andersen and Eiseley branch libraries as well as Bennett Martin public library.
VITA income tax assistance is organized by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
“We have students on campus that are involved, so it’s an opportunity for them to take some training and skills they’ve learned and apply them. Also, members of our community have reached out and are spending their time to come and do this as service,” said McGuire.
At each appointment, IRS–certified volunteers will provide free basic income tax return preparation to qualifying individuals.
It’s meant for families who have a lower or moderate income.
Also A-A-R-P is offering free tax preparation for low to moderate income tax payers.
