Retired Nebraska fire chief who died while helping fight wildfire is laid to rest
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Retired Fire Chief John P. Trumble was laid to rest on Friday afternoon after tragedy struck last week.
Trumble died while working as a spotter for firefighters battling a wildfire in southwest Nebraska.
His funeral in Cambridge honored the legacy of the hero gone too soon.
The Rev. Jeff Donelan delivered the eulogy, saying Trumble “didn’t just love serving people; he loved people by serving them.”
On Monday, Channel 8 spoke with Kyle and Staci Trumble about their dad and his passion for serving his community.
“My dad loved helping people; he was always there to help. He loved it,” Kyle Trumble said. “He was fire chief for 14 years, and he just, he absolutely loved being a fireman.”
Donelan left those in attendance with words that encouraged them to celebrate Trumble’s life and remember his impact.
“Celebrate might sound contradictory to our situation today, but it is my prayer that we would not only remember him in our sadness, but also we would celebrate the impact he had in our lives,” Donelan said.
