Apartment fire near 21st and J street leaves residents displaced

An apartment fire broke out Saturday evening, forcing evacuations.
Just after 7 pm, a call came in about an apartment near South 21st and J street.
Lincoln Fire and Rescue responded to the call and found fire in the walkways of the apartment complex.
Officials say a resident was burning a rug when it started on fire, then spread to the attic.
“The fire got knocked down relatively quickly. There is about $177,000 worth of damage here, we’ve displaced numerous residents as a result of this fire,” said Battalion chief Dave Engler.
Fire crews had to go through windows to search and make sure no one was left in the apartment.
Fortunately, every one made it out and there were no injuries.
