LATEST: Explosive device found near Lincoln Middle School

A homemade explosive device was found Friday morning near Pound Middle School in Lincoln.

A man who was out walking his dog in a neighborhood near South 48th street and Highway 2 came across the device and took it home before calling authorities.

Investigators thought it was just a routine call at first, but they soon advised caution after seeing it for themselves.

“It was a homemade device, I can’t really get into specifics, it wasn’t a conventional item series like an M-80 or anything like that. It was something that was constructed with some unusual characteristics that it caused us enough concern that we wanted to go remote and stay away with our robot,” said Chief Fire Inspector Bill Moody.

With the device in the man’s driveway, inspector Moody called in their bomb robot to take a closer look.

The device was about 8 inches long and two inches wide.

It was secured in a containment vessel, and taken away.

Inspector moody says it was then x–rayed and detonated outside of city limits..

As for what the device could have been used for, the inspector has an idea.

“Probably, it was attempted to be lit and then thrown out of a car, but that’s just speculation at this point but it would be logical,” said Inspector Moody.

The entire situation developed and came to a close in about an hour.

Luckily, Pound Middle School was not in session, so the building was not evacuated.

Since the device was found so close to a school, authorities are going to give it a closer look.

“We’re going to go over with Lincoln Fire and LPD and do a sweep of the school and the playground, the device was initially discovered in front of the school and then carried here by a homeowner,” said Inspector Moody.

Police will be patrolling the area to make sure there aren’t any other potentially dangerous devices.

At this time, there is no danger to the public.
