Officials are also asking that Lincoln residents remember to dispose of unused fireworks and the trash left behind after holiday celebrations.

They ask that firework debris be cooled off in water or sand buckets before being placed into the trash.

Unused fireworks and ammunition will be accepted by Lincoln Fire and Rescue at a free collection event on July 5 from 9 a.m. to noon at Oak Lake Park.

Officials remind residents to not take firework debris or boxes to city recycling collector sites.

“Litter that is washed down storm drains eventually flows into streams, rivers and lakes, and the potentially harmful substances in fireworks can pollute the environment and harm aquatic life,” said Erin Kubicek, Environmental Health Educator. “If it is in our streets, it is in our streams, so remember ‘only rain in the drain.’”
