Nebraska cut an 18-point lead to three points late in the fourth quarter, but the Huskers couldn’t complete the comeback in a 45-42 loss to USC in the National University Holiday Bowl.

USC took a 45-27 lead late in the third quarter on a Cody Kessler to Bryce Dixon touchdown pass when Nebraska started its comeback.

The next possession, Tommy Armstrong Jr. scrambled to find Jordan Westerkamp for a 65 yard touchdown pass, cutting the Trojan lead to 45-34.

The Nebraska defense forced three straight USC three and outs, giving the Husker offense a chance. Armstrong made things interesting midway through the fourth quarter with a 15 yard touchdown run on 4th down and one. Kenny Bell then caught a 2-point conversion, making it 45-42 USC.

After back to back unsuccessful possessions for Nebraska, the Huskers had one final chance on the last play of the game. Armstrong’s Hail Mary pass was knocked down, giving USC the 45-42 win in the Holiday Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.

Armstrong finished the game 31 of 49 for 379 yards and three passing touchdowns to lead the Huskers. He also added a rushing touchdown. Ameer Abdullah had 89 yards rushing and a touchdown to go along with six catches for 61 yards in his final game as a Husker.
