LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — In the week leading up to the season opener, Channel 8 KLKN-TV readers voted on their favorite Husker football players of all time, by position.

Quarterback

Tommie Frazier was picked as the quarterback of this dream team, and for good reason. He led Nebraska to national championships in 1994 and 1995, capping an undefeated season each time.

He threw for 3,521 yards and 43 touchdowns over his Husker career and also racked up 36 rushing touchdowns.

Eric Crouch came in second among quarterbacks.

Wide receiver

Irving Fryar won a close battle at wide receiver with Johnny Rodgers.

In just three seasons (1981-83), Fryar caught 67 passes for 1,196 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also rushed for five TDs.

Running back

Mike Rozier was the overwhelming choice for running back, though readers were disappointed that our poll didn’t include Lawrence Phillips, whose actions off the field greatly detracted from his athletic accomplishments.

Rozier, who played from 1981 to 1983, still holds the school records for career and season rushing yards.

His career total of 4,780 yards includes a staggering 2,295 in 1983. That was the same year he scored 29 touchdowns, also a season record.

Ahman Green finished a distant second.

Defense

Ndamukong Suh plays in the Holiday Bowl on Dec. 30, 2009.

Among defenders, Ndamukong Suh crushed the competition — just like he did on the field.

Suh recorded 24 sacks in his five-season Husker career, tying for the fourth-most in school history.

His career 57 tackles for loss is second only to the 58.5 made by Grant Wistrom, who placed second in the Channel 8 poll.

As a senior in 2009, Suh was named the Associated Press College Football Player of the Year Award and was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy.
