Accounts are now being forced to pay a monthly fee if they want to keep their verification status.

CEO Elon Musk says there was a reason behind the move.

He wants to treat everyone on the platform equally.

Many believe the new fee is offsetting the $44 billion spent to buy the company in 2022.
