In February, Martinez was selected in the second round of the USFL draft by the New Jersey Generals, led by former Husker coach Mike Riley.
But instead of pursuing a career in the USFL, Martinez took his chances in the NFL.
Martinez spent four seasons with the Huskers under former head coach Scott Frost.
He played in 39 games and threw for 8,491 yards, 45 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. The California native also rushed for 2,301 yards and 35 touchdowns.
For his final year of eligibility, Martinez transferred to Kansas State and played in nine games.
Martinez spent the second half of the season dealing with injuries, so he missed his team’s Big 12 Championship win and its Sugar Bowl loss.
