Nebraska farmer suffers another blow when winds knock down corn

NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. (KLKN) – Crops were flattened by damaging winds on Thursday, and some farmers are worried about more storms to come.

Kurt Schreiter, a farmer who lives just a couple of miles south of Nebraska City, said the weather got bad early Thursday morning.

“Well, we had a storm come through this morning around 7 o’clock,” Schreiter said. “Looked like about 60-mile-an-hour winds, and it blew hard for about 10 to 15 minutes.”

Schreiter said he didn’t get any hail, but the winds were enough to flatten a large portion of his crops.

“It looks like about 80% of my corn has some damage to it,” he said. “I don’t think it’ll ever stand back up. Who knows? But I haven’t had this kind of damage in quite a few years.”

He said this year has already been tough on farmers with the drought, so this was yet another setback.

Just a couple miles north of his farm, the corn was fine in other farmers’ fields.

He said it must have only been his area that was hit so badly.

“We’ve been wanting rain for a long time,” Schreiter said. “We got it, and unfortunately, the wind had to come with it.”

With more storms forecast in the coming days, Schreiter said he’s trying to prepare as best he can.

And though he said the damage will be costly, he’s got insurance to help him cover the loss.
