Former Nebraska Congressman Jeff Fortenberry could be getting a new trial

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) —A skeptical federal appeals court in California is raising several questions regarding former Nebraska Congressman Jeff Fortenberry.

The former nine-time representative is appealing his conviction that he made false statements to federal agents, the Nebraska Examiner reported.

Fortenberry claimed he unfairly faced a jury in California.  Now at least one judge is leaning toward a new trial, according to the Nebraska Examiner.

Fortenberry says he should have been tried in his home state or Washington, D.C., where the statements were made.

This all stems from the 2022 decision where Fortenberry was convicted of three felonies for accepting $30,000 in contributions from a foreign donor.

Doing so is illegal in the U.S.  The jury found him guilty of lying to the FBI in its investigation into the incident.
