Scattered storms possible, mostly north and east; Much cooler Sunday

There are multiple watches across the state of Nebraska for Saturday evening.

A Tornado Watch has been issued for northeast Nebraska until 10 p.m. Saturday. A couple tornadoes will be possible, along with damaging winds and large hail. This watch means both tornadoes and severe thunderstorms are favorable in and close to the area.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for southwest Nebraska until 1 a.m. Sunday.

Southeast Nebraska and Lincoln are not included, but scattered storms still possible later on tonight.

Svr Watch

The Storm Prediction Center has kept much of eastern Nebraska under a Slight (Level 2 of 5) risk through Saturday night, as a cold front swings through our region. Latest models have shown far less of a chance for storms in southeast Nebraska, but we can’t completely rule out the possibility.

Through the evening, any severe storms that get going, especially to our north and east, will be capable of damaging winds, large hail and a tornado or two. As we’ve seen recently, if you’re caught under one of these, there’s a chance the heavy downpour could result in some flooding for a short while.

Really for the rest of the weekend, we should be clear of the severe risk. Off and on rain during the day Sunday and more clouds will bring us a cooler day overall. We’ll be on the backside of the system, behind the cold front, with cooler air moved in by stronger winds.

Skycast Tomorrow

We haven’t seen stronger winds (not associated with a thunderstorm) like this in some time. But by Sunday afternoon, gusts of 35-40 mph will be possible for quite the windy afternoon. It’ll almost be an early taste of fall when we’re actually sitting in early August! If you can believe it…

Temperatures look to stay well below average through much of next week, too.
