Lincoln Mayor announces a plan to add new police officers

Mayor Gaylor Baird says she will use the annual savings in Lincoln Police’s budget, including money saved by not replacing now retired Public Safety Director Tom Casady, to fund the 6 new positions.

These new officers will replace six veterans, and five of those veterans will take on new roles as investigators for each of the five geographic teams.

The new investigator roles will also allow for better case follow up, and provide more opportunities for growth within the department.

The move is being applauded by both the police chief and the president of the police union, who say adding police officers, is a top priority.

The new officers will be hired next January.
