Only a few more days left with the heat
Thursday will feature more triple-digit heat. We’re forecasting a high temperature near 104° in Lincoln. This is several degrees shy of the record high of 107° (1936). Sunshine will also prevail, with even less cloud cover than we saw on Wednesday.
The humidity on Thursday will likely be the lowest we’ve seen this week. From Saturday morning through much of Wednesday, dew points have continuously been above 70°. This is why it has felt so oppressively humid.
Dew points should be in the 60s on Thursday, and perhaps dipping into the 50s for some. Despite the slight reduction in humidity, we’ll still have enough to produce a heat index. We’re looking at heat indices a few degrees warmer than the air temperature, peaking anywhere from 105-110° in Lincoln.
COOLER AIR ARRIVES SOON
A cold front begins to move into northern Nebraska on Thursday. Slowly but surely, the front will progress south. The cold front pushes through southern Nebraska on Friday.
Because the front will be moving through on Friday, it will still be hot and muggy in the southern half of the state. Meanwhile, northern Nebraska will experience cooler air as early as Friday. Everyone sees the relief by Saturday.
There’s also a chance for showers and storms. On Thursday, the storm chances reside primarily in northern Nebraska. However, the shower chances shift south with the cold front on Friday. It appears that Friday’s storm activity will operate on an isolated basis.
Scattered showers are also possible on Saturday, and by then, it will be significantly cooler. Things will dry out by Sunday, with highs in the 80s.
