Enjoy fall for another day before a frost/freeze comes our way

As we head into the “downhill” part of the work week, expect about one more day of pleasant, fall-like temperatures. We should be in the lower 70s this time of the year, and we will be. By Thursday afternoon, expect highs right around 72 for Lincoln.

Lincoln Today Hour By Hour

After Thursday, we’ll be watching for a surge of cold air coming in from the north. A cold front first moves through in the morning, so models are hinting at some light precipitation, mostly sprinkles, possible early on.

Then, we clear out quickly and the wind kicks into gear just behind the front. Throughout the morning especially, expect wind gusts of at least 35-40 mph out of the northwest. That’ll make Friday feel even colder than it’s expected to be. Highs will only be around the upper 50s by the afternoon.

For the Husker game on Friday night, kickoff will happen in Champaign, Illinois, at 7 p.m. At the start of the game, temperatures should be in the lower 50s. But temperatures only continue to fall from there. Expect cooler football weather with 40s throughout this night game and a good breeze out of the northwest.

At Illinois

Back at home, we’ll be quite chilly Friday night into Saturday morning. The potential for the first frost and even freeze for most is there. Temperatures in the “freeze territory” are indicated in pink below. Blue colors indicate more of a frost.

For this reason, a Freeze Watch is in place for the overnight hours into Saturday morning. Almost the entire state is under this watch, but Lincoln just expecting more a frost at this point.

Here’s where morning lows are expected to be by Saturday and Sunday morning. Cold, cold mornings ahead for this upcoming weekend!

After that, we’ll warm up on Saturday to the 70s again and throughout next week. But for this weekend, be ready to pull out the flannels after a fall-like day on Thursday.
