Update: Saturday morning Lincoln street conditions

Update:

Twenty City crews suspended street patrol at 8 a.m. Saturday. Arterial, school and bus routes are dry with normal driving conditions. Drivers should stay on alert for slick areas caused by refreezing moisture, especially on untreated streets and sidewalks. Slow down, increase following and stopping distance and avoid distractions.

This will be the final report. We appreciate the public’s cooperation as we work through the night to keep streets as safe as possible for the weekend.

Update:

Twenty City crews are applying granular salt, pre-wet with brine to arterial streets as needed.  They will stay on patrol overnight to treat or plow as warranted.

Arterial streets are generally wet with normal driving conditions, but freezing temperatures and light snow are creating icy conditions. Use extreme caution especially on untreated streets and sidewalks.  Drivers are urged to slow down and increase following and stopping distance.  Please give City crews plenty of room to work.

A National Weather Service Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until midnight.  Freezing drizzle mixed with snow continues to be possible overnight.

The city crews sent out 28 plows to put down brine on Friday afternoon before the freezing drizzle hit in an effort to keep the streets clear.

The afternoon was the ideal time to work on the roads before the busy commute times in the evening.

“When you get into that end of school time rush hour you know it’s Friday night you know people are running errands for the week certainly just give caution. We are going to be out there doing the best we can getting the roads travel able,” Travis Laughlin the District Supervisor said.

When it comes to advice on how to drive on the streets during the winter weather it’s fairly simple.

“Give yourself extra time, give your self extra time to get to your destination extra time to stop, you know just drive for the conditions it might not especially with the freezing drizzle,” Travis Laughlin the District Supervisor said.

The city crews will be treating the streets of Lincoln all throughout Friday night and into Saturday morning.
