White Cane Day celebrates independence for blind and visually impaired

WARWICK, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Islanders recognized White Cane Day with an event in Warwick sponsored by InSight and the National Federation of the Blind.

White Cane Day is a national celebration that recognizes the achievements of blind and visually impaired individuals.

“It’s an event to gather the blindness community together in order to celebrate this great tool I have in my hand,” Youth Advocate Ryan Lukowicz said, motioning to his own cane.

Lukowicz said that canes empower the blind and visually impaired and promote their independence.

The event featured balloon artists, face painting, an ice cream sundae bar, and a DJ.

“It’s something that brings professionals, students, teachers, parents, and allies together,” Lukowicz said.
