PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — The Providence City Council passed a resolution Thursday calling for the Biden Administration to order a ceasefire in Gaza.
The resolution urges the Biden Administration to call for an end of violence and send humanitarian assistance to war-torn Gaza.
The resolution says over 7,000 Palestinians and 1,400 Israelis have died and thousands have been wounded.
“All human life is precious, and the targeting of civilians, no matter their faith or ethnicity, is a violation of international humanitarian law,” the resolution reads.
Councilman Miguel Sanchez said on X, formerly Twitter, that the council became one of the first legislative bodies in the country to pass a such a resolution in response to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Sanchez was fired from his position as a staffer for Gov. Dan McKee after voicing his pro-Palestine stance online. He also shared a video to X of him marching in a pro-Palestine rally.
The governor’s office told ABC 6 News on Tuesday, “While we do not comment on the details of personnel matters, we can say that the individual’s words and actions became a major distraction to the daily work of the governor’s office.”
The American Civil Liberties Union of Rhode Island and Black Lives Matter Rhode Island PAC have both spoken out in support of Sanchez, claiming his termination was unjustified and a matter of freedom of speech.
