Pillens light Capitol tree, then host new Christmas tradition at Nebraska Governor’s Mansion
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) — The state’s Christmas tree was lit Sunday afternoon in the 75th annual Capitol tree lighting.
Gov. Jim Pillen and first lady Suzanne Pillen had the honor of lighting the tree.
The 20-foot tree was donated by the Upper Big Blue Natural Resources District, and the ornaments were shaped like Nebraska.
The governor said a few words, wishing all of Nebraska a happy holiday season.
“An incredible, incredible Merry Christmas, and may God bless you all for all that you do for the people and your neighbors in the greatest state that the world’s ever known,” Pillen said.
The event featured musical performances, including by students from St. Teresa Catholic School.
Their music teacher, Terri Schilmoeller, said they were all happy to be there.
“I think one of the biggest Christmas messages is one of joy, and so kids are perfect at exuding joy,” she said. “This is a great way for them to be able to celebrate with everybody.”
Those wishing to see the tree are encouraged to come to the Capitol before it is disassembled on Dec. 28.
After the lighting event, the governor and first lady welcomed the community to their residence, a new holiday tradition.
“This is not only our home but everyone’s home,” said Suzanne Pillen. “This is just a fun day for us as much as everyone’s here.”
Those attending enjoyed face painting, a balloon artist, hot cocoa, cookies and more.
