Trooper injured when chase ends in crash on I-80 northeast of Lincoln
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A person was arrested Monday after crashing into a trooper during a chase near Lincoln, the Nebraska State Patrol says.
Around 12:40 p.m., a trooper tried pulling over a speeding Ford Fusion on Interstate 80 in north Lincoln.
But the driver refused to stop and continued heading west, according to the patrol.
The driver – who has not been identified – passed several vehicles on the shoulder at over 100 mph, the patrol said.
They turned around at the Milford interchange and started heading back toward Lincoln.
A patrol helicopter took over the pursuit as the vehicle sped through Lincoln, according to the patrol.
The troopers continued their pursuit on the ground after the driver left the city.
Around 1:15 p.m., the driver rammed a trooper’s patrol car, causing both vehicles to roll on I-80 near Greenwood, the patrol said.
The trooper’s vehicle came to a stop in the median, and the other vehicle ended up in a ditch.
The driver – who refused medical treatment – was taken into custody, and charges are pending.
The trooper was taken to a Lincoln hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
I-80 was closed in both directors for about 75 minutes, the patrol said.
Both directions of I-80 are now OPEN. Thanks for your patience.
Details forthcoming on the situation that caused the closure. A suspect is in custody and there is no danger to the public. https://t.co/uYUWO0820O
