Lincoln Boy Scouts participate in annual Christmas tree collection service
LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – For the 25th year, Boy Scouts from Troop 8 in Lincoln are picking up Christmas trees to recycle.
The Scouting For Trees service allows residents to leave their trees on the curb for the Boy Scouts to collect.
The trees are then turned into wood chips for city landscaping and community use.
Coordinator Brooks Rushman said it’s good for the environment and a learning experience for the Boy Scouts.
“They learn how to make a difference, how to take care of their environment,” Rushman said. “They’re learning how to be better citizens by this project.”
Rushman said it is not ideal for Christmas trees to be disposed of in landfills because low oxygen levels prevent decomposition.
“This keeps it to where it can be utilized right away,” Rushman said.
The troop is collecting trees on Saturday, Sunday and Jan. 13. The service is free, and trees need to be left out by 9 a.m. for pickup.
You can make a reservation on the service’s website or by calling 402-965-1458.
