Voluntary water restrictions lifted in Lincoln, an estimated $15-17 million dollars in damage to well field

The city of Lincoln told residents and businesses they can use water like normal after a week of mandatory and voluntary restrictions. Inspectors were flown into the flooded wells by the Platte River by Helicopter. The city learned three wells were functioning normally and two would need repairs. They said the wells were pumping 60 million gallons of water which is enough to allow the city to lift the voluntary water restrictions.
The city estimates $15 to $17 million dollars in damages which will be covered by insurance or FEMA.
Assistant director of Lincoln Transportation and Utilities Donna Garden teared up as she described the department’s efforts during a very stressful period. She said she was very proud of the department’s efforts and everyone who helped get water flowing again. The Omaha Public Power District helped restore power to the wells and pump.
