Lincoln Public Schools issues statement about why they didn’t close school today

Nearly 2 days after the blizzard and the sub-zero temperatures are having an impact on the roads throughout the city.

Lincoln Police have responded to several accidents, spin outs and stalled cars.

The commute had some LPS parents wondering why school was still in session.

“As far as safety goes, I don’t think it was a good decision at all,” LPS parent, John Geist said.

Another parent figured LPS would still have school but says the Monday morning commute was not safe.

“I’m good with it, but it was a crazy drive this morning,” LPS parent, Karen Mankhey said.

LPS Spokeswoman Mary Kay Roth issued the following statement:  “Many Lincoln Public Schools staff members come together to consider the impact of the weather on the ability of students and parents to get to and from school, as well as the impact that holding or canceling school may have on the wide-ranging circumstances facing LPS families and the community.  Please know that the decision is weighed very carefully and students and families were foremost in our minds as we made the decision to hold school today,” Roth said.

Lincoln Public Schools has already closed schools four times this school year. LPS allots five snow days per school year-after that students are required to make up those days.

“Safety is more of a concern than how many days they’ve used,” said Geist. “It seems like every day we need a snow day, that’s the days they don’t use and every time they don’t need one, that’s when they use them.”

Other parents felt that no matter what the school decided not everyone would be happy.

Bridget says in part, “LPS can’t be blamed for poor driving or cars not equipped for a little snow packed roads. We live in Nebraska and it’s February. This isn’t shocking. Good call LPS.”
