Lincoln plow crews finish clearing roads, but some feel there’s more to be done

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – The Lincoln Transportation and Utilities Department said its crews have finished working on roads around town, but some residents aren’t satisfied.

Starting Thursday night, plow crews began clearing roads to keep the city moving.

On Sunday, LTU officials said, crews focused on addressing trouble spots where snow wasn’t fully cleared.

But some have complained that their streets haven’t been tended to well enough.

One woman, Amanda Vodraska, said she’s disabled and has to use a walker to get around.

She relies solely on the city bus system for transportation.

Vodraska said many bus stops around town haven’t been cleared of snow, which makes them harder for her to access.

“Every bus stop I’ve gone to that’s not, like, on a main artery is just piled up, up to my waist at some points,” she said. “The past couple days, I had to go to the gas station which is just up the street, and I had to walk down the road because the sidewalks weren’t plowed and there were just mounds of snow everywhere.”

In a statement, LTU officials said residents of Lincoln are responsible for clearing sidewalks and bus stops on their property.

“If you are unable to clear your sidewalk, please make a plan,” the statement said. “We recommend to arrange for a family member, neighbor or contractor to clear the snow for you.”

Vodraska hopes people will make bus stops a priority to help those who use medical devices to get around.

“It’s been very difficult,” she said. “I have to have one of my kids help me to the bus stop.”

LTU recommends taking advantage of the Snow Angels Program, which sends volunteers to help clear sidewalks and driveways for those who aren’t able to.

If a street has already been plowed, but you think it needs more attention, you can also make a service request online.

The city says winter operations crews have stopped for now but will resume work Tuesday morning.
