EDGARTOWN, Mass. (WLNE) — A female North Atlantic right whale was found dead on a Martha’s Vineyard beach, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), shared Tuesday.
On Jan. 28, NOAA Fisheries was informed of a dead whale near Joseph Sylvia State Beach on Martha’s Vineyard.
The Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head and other officials were able to secure the whale. A necropsy is set to be preformed when whether conditions ease up.
Officials shared that they observed rope entangled around the whale’s tail.
The whale’s age is undetermined at this time, but is estimated to be a juvenile based on its size.
NOAA informed ABC6 that they will be working closely with the Massachusetts Environmental Police and other local officials on the steps to follow.
This is an ongoing investigation. NOAA Fisheries said they will be sharing more information as it becomes available.
