Winter makes an appearance for short time

Quite the shock will be coming by this evening, temperature-wise. From the 80s and record heat of yesterday to the teens Tuesday night.

A strong cold front will track through the state Tuesday morning, and Lincoln and southeast Nebraska will be on the mild side warming to the 50s right before noon. After the front passes, winds pick up significantly. Light snow possible by the evening commute. Very cold overnight.

Lincoln was in the lower 50s around midnight, and we’ll try to get there again by the late morning. After, temperatures will plummet the rest of the day.

Coats will be a necessity for this evening as temperatures drop to the 30s and wind chills are in the teens. Around that timeframe heading into the evening commute, light snow will fall and wrap up across eastern Nebraska by about 10 p.m. tonight.

A dusting to half an inch is expected for most, while a little more snow is possible in northwest Nebraska through tonight. This shouldn’t last long as we warm right back up the rest of the week.

What will also send us right back to the winter feels will be the strong winds out of the north. Again, the front should make it through just about everyone by noon and then the winds will pick up today to around 40-50 mph out of the north. A Wind Advisory is in place for that reason for most of eastern Nebraska.

With temperatures plummeting from about noon on, we’ll drop to the teens tonight and into Wednesday morning.

Leftover wind gusts by Wednesday morning will still help it to feel that much colder. Wind chills will be in the single digits on either side of zero.

But this is a roller coaster we’re on this week. We’re facing the downhill part of it now, and then we’re cranking it back up into this weekend temperature-wise.
