Denton man meets woman on Facebook, loses $55,000 in bitcoin scam

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – A Denton man lost $55,000 in a bitcoin fraud scheme, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office says.

On Wednesday, a 65-year-old man checked his bitcoin wallet and found that all his money was gone.

Chief Deputy Ben Houchin said the victim met a woman — who identified herself as Lisa Davis — a few months ago on Facebook.

The two began messaging, and Davis convinced the victim to put his money into a bitcoin wallet.

Houchin said the victim gave Davis the password while setting up the account.

“We at the sheriff’s office cannot stress enough to everyone: Please do not give out personal information, pass codes, money, or send revealing photos to people you meet on social media,” he said.

An investigation is ongoing, but Houchin said it’s hard to solve fraud cases and recover the money.
